School Visits and Presentations

Programs:

Shirley will adjust any program to suit your school's specific needs. Let her know what you want.

  • Early Childhood Presentation: Story Time with No Bows! Program 1
    Story Time, Pictograph Group Activity and Art
    • Early childhood presentation for Pre-K – 1st grade
    • The author introduces the story using an interactive pictograph activity with Velcro bows and bowties, followed by story time and a discussion of pictures in No Bows! and how they help tell the story.

  • Make Your Writing Sparkle!  Program 2
    • Shirley teaches students how to liven up their writing using student participation and examples of what she discusses. The program, intended for students who have mastered basic writing, addresses specific ways to improve student writing for both fiction and nonfiction. For grades 3-6.

  • Beginnings, Middles, and Ends: Writing the Basics  Program 3
    • This program will instruct students in the basics of writing to a topic. The students will participate in a guided writing process, going through the stages of the process.

  • No Bows from Inspiration to Ending: How a Picture Book is Made  (Elementary School, Secondary School, or Adult Presentation) Program 4
    • Author will present a 45 minute show and talk about how the book began, the development of the book, and how it came to be, showing the stages of progress along the way.

  • Writing Beyond No Bows! Making a Student Mini-Book (Grades 2-3)  Program 5
    • Using selections from No Bows! as a guide, students will create a mini-book patterned after the book using word choices of their own. For younger students, author will work with the class to generate suggestions for vocabulary. Each student will complete his/her own book.

  • ESL Presentation with Vocabulary Introduced (For ESL Audiences; Elementary and Beginner level)  Program 6
    • The author will review No Bows! vocabulary and the students will participate in an interactive pictograph activity, followed by the story and general information about the book.

  • Why Read Picture Books? Program 7
    • Suitable for all elementary grades. The author talks about picture books and their value beyond the pictures. Available as an adult program.

  • Teaching Vocabulary Using Picture Books (Adult Program) Program 8
    • This presentation will discuss how picture books can be used to enhance early vocabulary development and second language acquisition. Strategies presented will identify ways to expose and familiarize children to rich vocabulary, help them acquire new vocabulary, and how to use the acquired vocabulary meaningfully.

  • What Are You Reading to Your Kids? Program 9
    (Adult Program, Early Childhood, or Preschool Parent PTA Presentation)
    • Using current research and both classic and contemporary literature, author will present a 30-45 minute talk about what makes quality children’s literature and suggest titles to include in everyday reading.
