| Early Childhood Presentation: Story Time with No Bows! |

Story Time with Pictograph Group Activity
The author introduces the story using an interactive pictograph activity with Velcro bows and bowties, followed by story time and a discussion of pictures in No Bows! and how they help tell the story. (Early childhood presentation for Pre-K – 1st grade) |

| Make Your Writing Sparkle! |
| Shirley teaches students how to liven up their writing using student participation and examples of what she discusses. The program, intended for students who have mastered basic writing, addresses specific ways to improve student writing for both fiction and nonfiction. (For grades 3-6). |

| What Are Your Genes? |
|
| Shirley uses her book, You Can’t Wear These Genes, to introduce the basics of heredity and DNA. Students participate in identifying particular traits that they have using slide show examples. They can take their traits back to the classroom and create a class chart comparison.

| Writing Nonfiction |
|
| Shirley shows how a nonfiction book develops and has the students practice writing a nonfiction paragraph using a list of facts. She models it using her book, Environmental Disasters. (For grades 2-3). |

| Healthy Inside Healthy Outside |
|
| Using No Bows! and Infections, Infestations, and Diseases, Shirley shows the importance of being healthy on the outside and inside. She demonstrates ways to avoid getting sick, proper hand washing, and handling peer pressure. (For grades 2-5. Adapted to a particular grade level needed). |

| Is It True? Writing Nonfiction |
|
| This program shows and tells the basics of research, organizing information, and getting it down on paper in an interesting way. The author shows the steps she took to revise her two nonfiction books and emphasizes the importance of revision in writing. (elementary level) |

| What Are You Reading to Your Kids? |
|
| |
Using current research and both classic and contemporary literature, author will present a 30-45 minute talk about what makes quality children’s literature and suggest titles to include in everyday reading. (Adult Program, Early Childhood, or Preschool Parent PTA Presentation) |
